Description

Laser Therapy: “Watts” Your Question and Other Laser “Joules”

Wondering what’s all the fuss about watts, joules, class 4, and laser dose? Is it necessary to understand them for optimum laser applications? You aren’t alone. For instance, practitioners are sometimes encouraged to buy a high-power laser when their clinical applications may require less power with appropriate wavelengths. On the other extreme, some proponents suggest purchasing very low-powered lasers with inappropriate wavelengths for many physical medicine applications.

This Nuts & Bolts session provides answers to typical questions such as:

  • What’s the connection between laser power, spot size, treatment time, and tissue penetration?
  • What are the best laser application techniques based on wavelength and power?
  • What is the best wavelength within the Therapeutic Window (between 600 nanometers and 1100 nm)?
  • When is it useful to combine different wavelengths?
  • When to use LED’s instead of lasers?

Nelson Marquina, DC, PhD, MSc is the Chief Technology Officer of Laser Biotech International and a developer of photonic and bioelectromagnetic systems and treatment protocols. He has earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics from Hamilton College, Master of Science degree in statistics from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and doctoral degrees in electrical & systems engineering from the University of Houston, and in chiropractic from Logan University. He is a former Senior Scientist at NASA/Johnson Space Center and Director of Research at Logan University. He conducts seminars and research presentations in laser photobiomodulation and photobiology in Japan, China, Australia, Argentina, Uruguay, Canada, and the United States. He has served on the faculties of the University of Houston in Systems Engineering, the University of Rhode Island as Research Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, the University of Minnesota in Electrical Engineering, and the Virginia State University as Associate Professor of Physics. Dr. Marquina also held positions with GE, Honeywell and Lockheed Electronics in technology development and management.
